Description
This listing is for a NON-WORKING Amoco 532-EH-50 50 mW 532 nm DPSS laser system. Includes laser head, controller, and umbilical cable.Amoco was not only an oil company but a manufacturer of outer-space-qualified lasers and other high tech equipment. The laser head for this unit was NOT matched to the controller, and the trim-pots on the controller have been turned so now it's not matched to anything. ;-) The laser head has control loops for the pump diode current, and for the pump diode TEC, lasing crystal heater, and doubler crystal heater adjustable with 10 (!!) trim-pots.
Signals are labeled so it may be possible to figure out exactly which pot does what but that's way above my determination enthusiasm level. ;(
Originally, the laser output up to a few mW in a nice TEM00 beam, but the power went way down when one of the 10-turn trim-pots (believed not related to the pump diode) was moved by a fraction of a turn never to recover.
It should be possible to figure out what they do by monitoring the pump diode current and TEC / heater current and temperature, etc.
The pump diode is likely weak or dead. It is in a standard TO3 package with built-in TEC and temperature sensor, and is probably rated at 0.5-1 W. While labeling on the package says something like "SDL Special AM", it is likely a standard diode selected for specific performance, or close to one.
Similar laser systems we've tested produced more than 50 mW Single Longitudinal Mode (SLM) / single frequency (though it's not known if SLM is in the spec). These probably had a list price of ,000-30,000 in the mid-1990s (Think of what that would be in today's dollars!)
The photos show both this unit with a fully intact laser head and controller that have not been disassembled except to take photos of the innards, and a different laser head of the same model that was taken mostly to bits to show the individual components (NOT included). Additional photos may be found in the "Laser Equipment Gallery" under "Amoco Diode Pumped Solid State Lasers". A Web search will find it since eBay doesn't like off-site links. :(
If you want a challenge, here it is!
At the very least, with a bit of cleaning and touchup, it would make a nice display piece for your historical laser collection.
No returns on this, sorry. ;-)
Feel free to as many relevant questions as desired. ;-)
Thanks for looking.
