Description
Vintage (early years 70'), pulsed xenon - filled, high energy, low repetition frequency, linear flashlamp to pump Nd:glass or ruby laser rods, type XL 615/10/5.5, made by English Electric Valve (EEV, now e2v technologies), UK. The linear design assures the best pump efficiency in an elliptical pumping chamber, ideal for a large laser rod oscillator or amplifier. Discharge dimensions: 10 mm dia. x 140 mm length, ideally should match the laser rod size. Good for rods of 9 mm - 14 mm dia. and 130 mm - 160 mm length. Total length (with electrodes): 220 mm (picture #1). Outer diameter: 12 mm. The electrodes are polarized, the anode is the shiny one, marked in red (picture #2), the cathode is the grey one, with a "granulated-surface" appearance (picture #3). New, never used, no original bag or box. The following charging/discharge circuit data are for a similar size flashtube made by Verre et Quartz, France, due to the unavailability of the EEV flashlamp catalog of that time (see flashlamps-vq.com/CatalogueVQF.pdf).The closest such lamp for comparison is VQX 1315. Although the technology of the seals between the electrodes and the fused silica envelope is different at EEV from Verre et Quartz, the operating characteristics can be considered similar, at least as a first approximation. Operating DC voltage V0
= 850 V - 2,250 V. Max. safe operating energy (for critically damped RLC circuit, 1,000 us (us = microsecond) pulse duration, and min. 10,000 pulses lifetime): E
max
= 1,500 J. Typical explosion energy (for critically damped RLC circuit, 1,000 us pulse duration, and few pulses lifetime): E
X
= 4,400 J. Typical operating regime: capacitor C = 1,000 uF (uF = microfarad); coil inductance L = 110 uH (uH = microhenry); nominal storage DC voltage in capacitor V
0
= 1,500 V; nominal stored energy E
0
= 1,125J; pulse duration T
1/3
= 1,000 us; expected lifetime (no. of pulses) cca. 100,000. Max. ave. power in open air: 450 W; max. ave. power in water: 3,000 W. Typical trigger voltage: 19 kV - 22 kV.
