    Description
    This is an ORIGINAL and increasingly rare Red Army (RKKA) wool overcoat or greatcoat made for and worn by extras in the famous David Lean film "Dr. Zhivago" (1965).
    I bought this overcoat in November, 1997 from two enterprising fellows who were cleaning out the Hollywood prop houses of military uniforms of various sorts and selling the uniforms at the Great Western Gun Show in Pomona, CA.  I had originally intended to wear this overcoat in WWII Eastern Front re-enactments, but luckily we never had a "battle" in snowy winter conditions.  Instead, I wore the padded "telogreika" winter field jacket.  The coat has been carefully stored horizontally in an archival box during the intervening 20 years.
    The coat is made of heavy "melton" wool in a medium brownish color, very similar in color and weight of fabric to the brown wool used in WWII U.S. Army overcoats. The coat is in MINT overall condition and has a charcoal black lining. The coat has inside the lining the label of United Costume/Hollywood and has hand-written on it a chest size of 42" and "Russian Private" (See image above).  However, it appears to be over-stamped with "46" and when I tried it on it was huge!  I'm normally a size 44-46 and I'm 6'-1" and 190 pounds, but I felt like I was wearing my big brother's coat, with the 28" sleeves extending to my knuckles! The actual measurements are as follows:  Chest 24""; Sleeves 28"; Shoulders 21.5"; and Overall 54".  The coat has red diamond insignia on the collar tabs with black piping and crossed rifles, indicating an infantry private, I guess.  The coat is closed by six hooks and eyes, with an additional hook and eye to close the collar neck (see images below).  The sleeves  have 4.5" rolled cuffs.  As I guess was customary, the coat has a long inverted pleat in the back with a half belt straddling the back waist secured by two gold domed buttons, rather than the later "hammer and sickle" buttons.  There is also a 23" long vent at the bottom of the back which can be buttoned closed.  Lastly, the coat has two unflapped or "besom" pockets at the waist.  Whoever manufactured this overcoat did a superb job in workmanship in all its details!
